The 2010 Year in Review: R.I.P. Lena Horne

As you should know by now y your morning scan of the news, Lena Horne passed away last night at age 92. While her body of work was before my time, her beauty, class and activism was timeless. Her career paralled the struggle of her people and she was denied the opportunities she deserved, but opened the door for generations of Black performers to come, like Alicia Keys who is rumored to portray her in an upcoming biopic.

I was first introduced to her as Glenda the Good Witch in The Wiz and saw her on episodes of "Sesame Street", "The Cosby Show", "A Different World" and "Sanford & Son" and of course, commercials for The Gap and Crest toothpaste. I can only hope more women will follow her blueprint...
