So What‘cha Saying?

Have you ever listened to a postgame interview with an athlete? I mean really listened? It doesn't matter if they catch them immediately after the game or if they go shower, change and come to the media room, it all sounds the same, regardless of the sport.

Interviewer A: So "Insert Athlete's Name Here", you guys pulled out a tough win tonight, can you tell us what was going through your mind down the stretch?

Athlete A-Z: Well you know Interviewer A, we've been in this situation before, so I told my guys we've been in this situation before, it's tough to win on the road, but we brought our "A" game today and we're happy to pull out a win in the end. You don't play these games on paper, we had to turn the intensity up and show that we were hungrier tonight.

Interviewer A: Let's talk about your performance, you really had an MVP worthy performance tonight.

Athlete A-Z: Everybody on this team is an MVP. I'm just happy to make a contribution, this was a big win for us, a confidence booster. It wasn't always pretty, but we pulled it out in the end.

Interviewer A: Ok…so what's next for this team, you guys seem to be playing really good ball right now?

Athlete A-Z: The sky's the limit. We feel if we're playing at the top of our game, no team is better than us. We're really hitting our stride right now and we're gonna be a team to reckon with down the stretch.

Interviewer A: Thank you for your time.

Athlete A-Z Says something unintelligible that sounds like no problem and sends a shoutout to the former pro athlete working on the studio show.

I'm starting to believe that at these rookie symposiums they give out a book of clichés for athletes to study for the quid pro quo world of postgame interviews. Damn the athlete that grows a brain and goes off script and actually thinks of intelligent responses that go over the head of the average sports fan. We can't have that, we need the by the book response, because that separates them from us, they're supposed to be these superhuman specimens and we're the smart ones that pay to watch their Herculean performances.

I guess it is a good thing when they go by the book, we could have more moments like these…
