I have a confession: I’ve been watching the new singing contest “The Voice”. The more I watch, the more I see this show as a microcosm of the music industry, pop music has reemerged and soul music is largely overlooked, even in Black popular music. None of the televised male singers, could be considered soul singers, even though Javier Colon was considered as neo-soul his first time around as an artist on Capitol Records. The sound of “The Voice” is decidedly pop, a cue many of your favorite artists, from Usher to Chris Brown have taken.
