Within days of President Obama’s inauguration, a 2009 calendar featuring the new president and his family went up at my favorite watering hole. The calendar was featured prominently center bar, over the register, nestled between Beef Jerky and top-shelf vodka. It was at that moment I realized that Barack Obama transcended politics and became the new symbol of Black Nationalistic Pride. I stared in wonderment at the new addition to the bar, thinking that it was grossly out of place amongst the alcoholics, hustlers and pedestrians that believed politics to be a rich man’s game. Besides, this was a place where someone loudly repeated “NWACP” multiple times without being corrected when Rosa Parks passed, so the national agenda on politics wasn’t high on bar chatter.
