The World Goes to Sleep at Night

When it rises with the Sun, what lies ahead that day for the World is just as uncertain as it is for you and I. In these uncertain times, all we know for sure is that we're going to be hungry at some point that day, there's going to be gossip and the ignorance level is going to be dialed up a little higher than the day before. Hey, it's just the way of the world.

I'm pretty sure that Chileans didn't expect when they woke up yesterday to be caught up in the midst of the fifth-most powerful earthquake since 1900. An earthquake that had an 8.8 magnitude was followed by at least 76 aftershocks that registered at 4.9 or better on the Richter Scale. Talk about uncertainty? At least knowing the ground beneath your feet will remain in place is one thing we should be sure about while flossing. With the world still reeling from the devastating quake that struck Haiti last month, the last thing we needed was another natural disaster to destroy a nation. While the causalities were low compared to the Haitian quake, the results were literally felt around the world.

The quake was so powerful that the world was put on tsunami alert and it was initially thought that the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean would be trumped by the waves that raced around the world. Tsunami waves hit Hawaii and Japan but were tamer than predicted, but left me wondering if some gnarly dude decided to grab his board and tried to ride the waves that came crashing though? Tsunami warnings were cancelled, but Chile is picking up the pieces and bracing for aftershocks while folks are waking up this morning to praise the Lord, talk about last night with their girlfriends or preparing to watch the NBA on ABC this afternoon, the World doesn't nap during the day…
