2011 seemed to be the year of the return. Artists like Tyrese, Goapele, and Kindred the Family Soul released albums after extended breaks, and as the calendar flipped to 2012 the anticipation started to rise for the return of Brandy, D’Angelo,Ashanti, Alicia Keys and others. However, one name doesn’t seem to be mentioned nearly enough to match not only her talent but the level of success she’s achieved over the course of her career: India.Arie.
Flashback to the 2002 Grammy Awards. India.Arie was a new artist nominated for seven awards–all of the big ones (Best New Artist, Album, Record and Song of the year)–but went home empty-handed. Not only did she not win, but she lost in five of those categories to Alicia Keys, who skyrocketed to superstardom while Arie became the peoples’ champ for a while.
