Triple Jumping Double Standards

Around 5:30 this morning I was up watching E! for some unknown reason when the conversation turned to the movie "Bruno" and the praise that followed amazed me. For the next three minutes nothing but superlatives were used to describe the movie, Sasha Baron Cohen and the movie's predecessor "Borat". I have no clue what the movie is about or the origins of the character, but I do know that it looks pretty offensive, yet he is celebrated by the media.

So, I got to thinking...if I put together one of these mockumentaries examining racial attitudes by confronting White Supremacists, getting some old Niggas to talk about how much they hate White folks or exposing White teen angst and rebellion against their whiteness by loving hip-hop and big booty Black women, would it be called reverse racism and I be subject to vilification.

It was just a thought, it's double standards like those that allow films like "Superbad" and "Knocked Up" to be considered comic genius when they are filled with the same stupidity that films made and starring Black actors are, but missing the cultural anecdotes that we identify with are panned.

It's these same standards that allow talking heads like Donnie Duetsch to reduce Michael Jackson to being just a "singer and dancer", while Elvis' no talent ass is a martyr and his home a tourist attraction and national landmark. It comes from the same place that called Michael a molester and issued a wedding license to Jerry Lee Lewis and Woody Allen.

You know, Janet Jackson still hasn't fully recovered from her little "slip" during the Super Bowl, but Britney Spears went stone crazy for an entire year and somehow managed to make $35 million in the past year.

I was just thinking...
