Over 34 million people watched the opening ceremonies for the Olympics...*crickets* Why? Are people that enamored by lights and colors? No one ran a race, kicked a freestyle or nothing! That is the worst part of the entire Olympiad, with the exception of equestrian!
We also lost Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes on Saturday and Sunday respectively. I say "we" because Black folks just have a totally different type of relationship with celebrities. We follow them so long and so strongly that they become like relatives. Distant cousins, uncles, friends you knew from way back when. Like I remember when Bernie Mac first appeared on Def Comedy Jam and he had those jeans with the airbrushing on them. Remember? He kept letting New York know "I ain't scared of you mutha%$#@&!" Then, he went on to blow up after King of Comedy, got a TV show, star in a couple of movies and we witnessed it all. Little did we know that he had sarcoidosis which left him susceptible to conditions such as pneumonia and he died from the complications over the weekend. But you know your folk, I'm just waiting for someone to say that it was something else...
Then Sunday we wake and Isaac Hayes is gone and all you can think of is the "Theme from Shaft" or his role in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka and you realize that the people you've grown up on are getting older and even though they have the fame, they're not gonna live forever
