In 2007, we've lost sight of that dream; well, it has been rolled up into the American Dream of materialism, because the freedom, justice and equality that we once fought for has lost its way to the pursuit of happiness wrapped up in American idols. Nevermind the fact that we're still separated by race and class, our school systems are failing horribly, gangs and drugs plague our communities, we're still trying to get a slice of the American Pie.
I remember my grandmother had a bust of Dr. King in her house and I would ask about him all of the time and in school he was one of the few black folks we were allowed to learn about. But do the kids today know who he is? When references are made to King, will an 8 or 9 year-old immediately think of T.I.? May be funny, but sadly it could be true. Somewhere along the line, we stopped honoring history and worrying about the future, so today has become the only reason for life. 80 years ago, Langston Hughes asked what happens to a dream deferred? The answer is simple, look out of your window.
Ok, my tirade for the week is done. Did you happen to watch The Golden Globe Awards last night? I watched as much as I could before wrestling and the Laker game started, but flipped back & forth for the major awards. It was great to see Jennifer Hudson win Best Supporting Actress and her reaction was priceless, but did you see Beyonce tearing up as she was giving her acceptance speech? All of that nonsense people were reporting about her having issues with Jennifer went out of the window, because you can never be that happy for anyone if you're jealous of them. Dreamgirls had a huge night because Eddie Murphy won Best Supporting Actor and the film won Best Picture for musical or comedy.
Does Jamie Foxx get high or since he got his Oscar he simply doesn't care? Not only did he shout out Jay-Z, but almost made reference to the fact that despite all of the critical acclaim and the awards the film has garnered, after 5 weeks in theaters it is just now being shown in over 1,000 screens. Hmmm, what else? Forest Whitaker and that dead eye of his won Best Actor for his role in The Last King of Scotland, haven't seen it yet (neither have many others) but I hear it's great.
